What Are The Best Concrete Stamping and Resurfacing Options?

Boston Concrete Floor Coatings

The most common form of concrete stamping involves the use of natural stone and brick patterns made with newly-poured concrete.

But did you know there are stamped concrete options that can also be applied directly over a preexisting cement surface?

Today, you have quite a few options for resurfacing ugly concrete.

Concrete Resurfacing Options Using Stamped Concrete

Stamped Concrete Overlays – These are applied at 3/16 to 5/8th inch thick. While still wet, you create unique designs using stone or brick patterns . The concrete is mixed with integral color with the option of topical stains or dyes. When dry, the surface is protected with a solvent-based sealer for best protection.

This overlayment option can be applied to both exterior and interior spaces. Popular uses include pool decks, patios, bars and restaurants looking for unique curb appeal, retail stores, hotel entrances and lobbies, office building sidewalks and lobbies and many more.

This is a great option for improving the value of real estate plus retail and hospitality facilities.

Types of Stamped Concrete Patterns include various types of brick, natural stone, slate, rock and even hardwood.

Broom Finish – Using the same overlay material, a broom finish. This is a slight texture for resurfacing ugly surfaces without the huge expense of removing the old concrete and repouring. Like a stamped finish, they can be integrally colored and topical stained or dyes. Then protected with a solvent or water based sealer.

Splatter Texture – This is a popular system for pool decks and patios. It is a spray system with a troweled “knock down” finish. These systems are typically mixed with integral color and sealed. They can be applied to both interior and exterior spaces.

Additional Stamped Concrete Options

Self Leveling Overlays – These are used for interior spaces at a thickness of ¼ to 3/8 inch. They are mixed in 5 gallon to 25 gallon containers. For large projects, pump systems can be used for high volume.

Integral color can be used for decorative surfaces. Additionally, they can be used as underlayments for tile, carpet and hardwood surfaces.

The concrete is poured on the surface and manually spread out using a guage rake. The guage rake can be set to the thickness desired for accurate results near steps, drains and doorways.

Microtoppings – These are high performance polymer flooring. These are applied in thin coats of approximately 1/16th inch thick. These can be smooth or textured with integral colors and dyes.

Epoxy Flooring – One of the most popular types of overlays are epoxy coatings. There are many systems available for virtually every use imaginable. They can resist hold and cold temperature changes in commercial kitchens, chemical spills, forklift wear and hot tires in garages.

In recent years, metallic epoxy decorative systems have created huge demand for a variety of uses.
